It's 2:30 in the morning and - 32 degrees C as the aurora borealis unveils itself in green and red curtains across frozen Gordon Lake here in Canada's Northwest Territories. With hands and eyes freezing cold and almost refusing to work I am surrounded in absolute silence as the northern lights dance and dazzle across the sky. This is why I have traveled so far and endured such cold, all to capture the magic. Words cannot describe the way I feel at this precise moment, a photograph will have to do. Enjoy!

Happy New Year 2010! What better way to usher in a new decade than with a full moon over tabular icebergs in the Weddell Sea? This scene took place at 11:40PM on January 1, 2010. This photo was taken one full day past the true full moon, which occurred on December 31, 2009. This full moon is actually a "Blue" Moon, the second full moon in the month of December. We won't see another Blue Moon on New Year's Eve until the year 2028, just proving the saying that great things (and images) happen once in a Blue Moon! For more Blue Moon images visit my Blog here Enjoy!

Finally! After five different trips to South Georgia it all comes together, as weather and sea conditions allow for a pre-dawn landing in St. Andrews Bay. As the sun comes up it paints the sky amazing shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. King penguins surround me as they return from their trip away from the nest in order to feed at sea. As they swim so gracefully to the beach they leave that elegance and turn into the clumsy land birds that waddle towards the camera, curious about this strange being in their midst. My camera clicks and whirs as the sun climbs higher. I feel the time slipping away as the sun gains altitude, warming the scene but losing that magnificent quality to the early light. Finally I am spent, physically and emotionally. National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, whom I am teaching photography with for this expedition, claims it is absolutely the best single day he has ever had filming in nature. I have to agree. To view more images from this expedition click on the Antarctica February 9 link above. To see what I am up to now click on the Where is Michael Now? link. Welcome to my website, WildlifeImages.net. Here you will see the results of my passion which is photographing wildlife and marine animals in their natural habitat and behavior. The images you see are the animals as they truly are, whether captured on film or on a compact flash card, in all their wild and natural beauty.

While here please take a moment to visit my Blog where you can see what I am up to now and view a few of my newest pictures as well. I try to keep my Blog interesting and informative as I write notes from my journal regarding the wildlife images displayed there. I hope you will also take a look at my Featured Images page. This page is updated frequently with new photographs that are available for purchase if you would like to have one of your own. In addition to these beautiful prints you can now see them every day on your computer with my screen savers.
